Scio13 watch-party: Feb. 5th

February 5th at 7 pm at Science World (1455 Quebec Street, Vancouver) Follow the signs around Science World to enter through the doors at back of building

The North American ScienceOnline 2013 conference is happening this weekend, and we would like to invite the ScienceOnlineVancouver community to join the fun and the discussions. We have chosen 2 of the most highly anticipated sessions from the conference, and will be hosting a watch-party at Science World on Tuesday February 5th followed by our own discussions. The sessions are hosted by some of the most prominent names in Science Communication and their presentations and piercing questions will hopefully kick-start some great discussions at our event.

The event will take place at on Tuesday February 5th, 7pm at Science World. We will not be selling drinks or snacks, but we strongly encourage everyone to bring their own wine/beer/hot chocolate and popcorn to give it a real movie night feel.

Hope to see you there for some great science communications sessions and vivid discussions.

The ScienceOnlineVancouver team.

Keep the fire burning

Last week, the American Association for the Advancement of Science came to town and the 2012 #AAASMtg lit a bonfire of scientific awareness in our city. Vancouverites passionate about science and science communication came out of their own “am I the only one?” solitudes and gathered around.

We have to keep that fire burning.

Thanks to Catherine (@genegeek), with help from Lou Woodley (@LouWoodley) at Nature, encouragement from local Science Online 2012 #scio12 alumni, bloggers and science writers, academics, educators and more, we’re about to start our own chapter of Science Online. Like SoNYC (@S_O_NYC) but here in our metropolis: SoVan (@S_O_Van). We’re so new, we’ve still experimenting with logos, headers and avatars.

Catherine and I invite you all to keep watching for the first, official SoVan event.  More than watch, though. We want you help us stoke the flames. The AAAS meeting revealed how many of us care, desperately, about telling meaningful, engaging, important stories about science. Let’s do it!

Drop a comment below if you’d like to learn more. We’ll harvest the email addresses and twitter handles so we can let you know whenever we throw a new log on the fire.  See you soon.
